Mission
The mission of the Code Enforcement Division is to sustain acceptable community standards that provide for the overall health, safety, and welfare of the community in accordance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
Key Tasks
- Respond to all violation complaints and ensure fair and consistent response
- Patrol within developed areas to ensure code compliance
- Order demolitions of derelict structures
- Ensure proper upkeep of yards
- Enforce litter ordinance and order the removal of litter or coordinate inmate labor if no culprit is identified

Code Enforcement is a service provided by Fairfield County to ensure compliance with the County’s Ordinances in an effort to maintain community standards. Code Enforcement’s mission statement is to “Provide for overall health, safety and welfare of the community”.

- Abandoned and Dangerous Buildings
- Abandoned Manufactured Homes/Mobile Homes
- Abandoned/ Junk Vehicles
- Upkeep of Lots and Public Nuisances

- How are Complaints Received?
Code Enforcement responds to complaints from citizens, community groups, and other agencies. Systematic inspections are also performed throughout the unincorporated area of the County in an effort to prevent developing situations from becoming worse. An individual may register a complaint by calling the Fairfield County Code Enforcement Officer at 803-712-6596. You are not required to give your name or provide any other personal information.
- How are Complaints Handled?
After receiving the complaint, the Code Enforcement Officer will determine the validity of the complaint. Once this is established, a violation notice is posted on the property owner’s door if no one is home. If the notice cannot be posted on the property owner’s door, a certified letter containing the specific violation and orders for abatement will be mailed or delivered in person if applicable.
- What happens when Non-Compliance Occurs?
Non-compliance will result in a citation being issued, requiring a court appearance. A guilty plea or judgment shall be punishable by a fine of no more than two hundred dollars ($200.00) unless otherwise noted in the ordinance. Each day of violation shall constitute a separate offense.
